![]() 1922-2008 I think of all the shows I did, the one I had the most fun with was "Beat the Clock." When we did it, we made the decision to emphasize younger couples. We did the stunts so they would be a challenge but we never put people in a position where they could be injured. Although, I remember one stunt where the wife had to hold onto the husband. He had to lift her up in order to pull a series of balloons from the top of a platform without sticking the balloons in some pins we had placed in strategic locations. This one couple finished the stunt but as he was bringing her back down, his hand slipped and, as they say today, she was mooning the audience. Let's just say we had to edit that show. I enjoyed my work and I always enjoyed the contestants. I knew that it wasn't important for me to be the star of the show. The contestants were. Any emcee who doesn't realize that shouldn't be in the business. If the game is good, the best thing you can do is get out of the way and let it unfold. If the contestants are good, they'll take care of the rest. I always felt like I was a day late and dollar short kind of guy. I did "Dotto" and it was the highest-rated show in the history of daytime television at the time. We are on at night and doing well and then the bottom falls out. I was doing "Video Village" and it was a show that CBS and Merrill Heatter felt was meant for me. Then, because of some personal reasons, I left it after a short time. I did the pilot for "Family Feud" and I probably felt better about that show than any I'd ever done. I felt the chemistry with the families and everything about that show just clicked. But Richard Dawson had a contract with Goodson-Todman that guaranteed him the pick of any pilot to host and when he saw "Family Feud," he said, "I want that one." You know what happened there. I did the pilot for "Tattletales" and that one looked good but CBS chose to go with Bert Convy. So, I didn't get to do a couple of shows I really felt I would have been good at doing but you can't look back at things like that. They just weren't meant to be.
